If you always paint your nails you might not mind them that much, but sometimes they can't look so nice. They then discolour to a somewhat yellowish shade, or even worse, they regularly peel or break off. That is of course not how it should be.
You can hide that nicely with a nice color, but actually say it Discolored nails have something to say about your health. The color of your nails and how they look are an important indicator of this. We will explain to you how this works.
What does a healthy nail look like?
A healthy specimen has a smooth structure and no discolouration. That's how it should be. But if there are discolourations or the texture is different, i.e. not just smooth, then there may be something wrong. In that case, it's better to leave them alone for a while.
So, even if you like neat, trendy painted nails, it's better to leave that for a while. It is also better to avoid fake nails for a while. That may take some getting used to, but they really need a moment of rest to recover.
How do you get soft nails?
In addition to discolouration, you can also suffer from very soft nails. This can cause your nails to break or tear. This is often because you come into contact with chemicals a lot. Your hands may be in a lot of moisture and that is not the best thing.
It can also be caused by detergent, but also by nail treatments or the remover you use. You may also have a deficiency of vitamin B, calcium, iron or fat. This will also make your nails a bit weak, so give them a rest.
If you know that you have an iron deficiency, you can of course take supplements, but make sure you check with your doctor first. Swallowing just about anything is not always convenient.
How do you get yellow nails?
This is almost always due to an infection, usually a fungal infection. Although the nail polish you use can also be a cause of this. In any case, it is smart to replace your nail polish in time and first apply a base color.
It is not common, but psoriasis or an abnormality of the thyroid gland can also be a reason.
Let those hands rest now too. The yellow color usually grows out on its own. If that takes too long, you can also try with Tea Tree oil, or a multivitamin that contains vitamin E. If it really takes too long, go see your doctor.
Green nails or black lines and white dots
Usually your nails turn a yellowish color, but sometimes they turn green. This could be due to the pseudomonas bacteria. Then they don't smell nice either, but luckily this will go away on its own.
They can get all kinds of colors. Black lines can also appear on it. This happens, for example, if your finger is stuck or if there is a splinter in it. These should disappear on their own, if not: consult your doctor it is!
We all have those white dots on our nails. This can be due to a zinc deficiency, but also an allergic reaction or a minor fungal infection. A protein deficiency is also common or if your nail is damaged. So keep a close eye on it.
What do the moons around your nails say about your health?
The moons, which are at the bottom, are often a bit lighter in color. Sometimes they cannot be seen at all, they are under the skin of your finger. That usually doesn't mean anything, so you don't have to worry about it.
But they can also disappear with severe anemia, malnutrition or during depression. Don't run straight to the doctor; Are you also dizzy and do you suffer from weight and mood swings? Then please consult your doctor.
