Dehydration is no joke, especially when it gets severe. It could lead to other health conditions and complications if not addressed properly. Here are a couple of tips on how you can prevent dehydration.
Don’t Ignore Thirst Cues
It is easy for you to ignore your thirst ques and get on with your work (which never ends!) in fact most of us tend to do this unintentionally, and it is certainly not a good thing when it comes to maintaining good health. Thus, always make sure you respond to thirst cues immediately. Consider keeping a water bottle nearby, whether you are at home or at your workplace, and keep drinking out of it from time to time. When this becomes a habit, you are less likely to become dehydrated.Â
Drink More than 8 Glasses
They say you need to drink 8 glasses of water, but in reality, you are likely to need a lot more. This could depend on factors such as your sex, and mostly the type of physical activity you are involved in on a daily basis. Presently, each one of us is likely to be working harder than we are required to, given the recent situations we’ve faced repeatedly. Thus, it only becomes obvious that we are going to need a lot more than just 8 glasses of fluid!
Drink More When Exercising
Physical activity, as mentioned above, is one key thing that should determine how much water your body needs. The more active, and the more intense, the more fluids you are going to need. Thus, if you are someone who works out regularly, you will need to up your water intake during such times in particular.
Opt for Electrolytes when Required
Intense physical activity sometimes calls for the replenishment of your body’s electrolytes. Thus, instead of relying on plain water, you might want to opt for an electrolyte-based drink. Natural options like coconut water work as an excellent replenishment. On the other hand, if you fancy a sports drink, you might want to have a couple readily available in your bag during every workout/sports session.
Try Your Options
It is not mandatory that you should rely on plain water alone for hydration. Fluids like fresh juices, flavored water, and sports drinks are great alternatives. Sometimes, you are likely to take in more fluids if you added them to your list along with plain water.
Also, fruits such as watermelon, cantaloupe, and strawberries are full of water, even oranges and grapes for that matter. Thus, consider popping them in your daily diet – it should work as both hydration and nutrition.
Drink Water as you Wake Up
Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning might be one of the best habits you’d develop. When you have slept eight hours or so at a stretch, you basically haven’t had anything to eat or drink. Additionally, if you’ve had fans, aircon, or heaters on through the night, you are going to wake up in a somewhat dehydrated state. Thus, drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning should work as essential hydration for your body.Â
